Description

“Trail-rated” Jeeps have always been real Jeeps with real part-time 4WD transfer cases and real 4WD low range gearing. Jeep Geek's know that the Renegade name was originally used back in the ‘70s when it denoted a trim and equipment package available as an option on the CJ (Civilian Jeep) series, the ancestor of today’s Wrangler. The current Jeep Renegade, however, is a unique model in its own right! Laid out differently than either the classic CJ, YJ, TJ, or the current Wrangler, the Renegade is based on a FWD/part-time AWD layout that’s similar to the layout of most current cars. The first Jeep with Italian roots, the Renegade and the Fiat 500L and X are all related, compact, five-door/hatchback crossover SUVs. The Trailhawk (that's the trim level), offers more off-pavement capability and has true off-road capability. It also comes with multiple driver-selectable terrain modes, very similar to the set-up you’d find in much more expensive (and very capable) SUVs like Rubicons and Land Rovers. Almost 9 inches of ground clearance, beefier suspension pieces, skid plates, knobby off-road tires and tow hooks (3 of them) earn its 'trail-rated' badging. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Trailhawk along with the 2.4 liter four cylinder. Only in the Trailhawk will you find the gear-reduction feature for low-speed slogging through mud or climbing/descending steep grades. It effectively mimics the 4WD low range of a traditional truck 4WD system. Can you take a Renegade Trailhawk off road and get back WITHOUT an assist from a Wrangler with a winch? Surprisingly, the answer is YES! Those “Trail Rated” badges are not a con. This Jeep can go places nothing else in its price range should even THINK about. What you get is probably 85 percent or so of the Disco’s and Rubicon's real capability for at least half the money. You might not be the quickest cars on the road, but when the road ends, not many cars (or even SUVs) will even be able to follow you. This Ren
